A
  • Penalty Areas are bodies of water, other areas defined by the committee where the ball is lost or unplayable
  • For one penalty stroke you may take relief from outside the penalty area

Defined area of a penalty area

A

The edge of a penalty area is defined by stakes, lines, physical features
Stakes - edge is defined by the outside points at ground level (stakes are in penalty area)
-lines - lines are in the penalty area
-physical features - beach, desert area, tall grass, retaining wall

When is your ball in a penalty area

A

Ball is in penalty area when any part of the ball lies on or touches

  • the ground
  • anything else (natural or artificial)

Can you play from a penalty area

A

Yes. You may play your ball as it lies under the same rules as in the general area. You may ground club, take practice swings and move loose impediments

When can you take relief in a penalty area

A

To take relief you either need to find your ball or it must be known/virtually certain that your ball is in penalty area

  • more than just possible/probable your ball is in the penalty area
  • not sure = stroke and distance

  • within one club length of previous spot
  • on same spot as last shot (if on green)

A
  • drop original ball or another ball
  • behind penalty area
  • in relief area within one club length of a reference point you choose
  • go far back as you want on reference line between hole, point ball was lost
  • if you forgot to choose a reference point your drop is where the reference point is

A

-no nearer to the hole
