Pediatric Assessments for Infants & Young Children Flashcards
Intro to assessments
Standardized tests that are designed to compare and rank test takers in relation to one another.
Norm-referenced
Large samples of various ages where means and SD are calculated by age group.
- EX: Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI)
- EX: Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS)
Norm-referenced
Performance is compared to a pre-defined set of criteria or a standard:
- Assesses the child against that criteria vs. compared to other children of same age
- Need a min score to “pass” or be placed in a pre-determined category
- Specific motor behaviors, ADL skills, fine motor skills (often are checklists)
- EX: E-LAP
Criterion referenced
True/False: Some tests are BOTH Criterion and Norm Referenced
True
Developmental assessments are primarily used to:
A) Diagnose specific medical conditions
B) Determine eligibility for educational settings
C) Evaluate cognitive abilities
D) Assess emotional development
need to be administered at 2 intervals 2 months or more
B) Determine eligibility for educational settings
- Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of developmental assessments?
A) They compare a child’s level of function to other children
B) They can be used to gauge change over time
C)They are typically administered at intervals of 2 months or more
D) They are always administered in an acute setting
D) They are always administered in an acute setting
- Performance assessments are primarily used to:
A)Diagnose specific medical conditions
B) Determine eligibility for educational settings
C) Assess particular behaviors of children
D) Evaluate cognitive abilities
C) Assess particular behaviors in children
- Performance assessments are typically:
A) Criterion-referenced only
B) Norm-referenced only
C) Either criterion-referenced or norm-referenced
D) Neither criterion-referenced nor norm-referenced
C) Either criterion-referenced or norm-referenced
**Typically **Criterion-referenced, however can be norm referenced
- Both developmental and performance assessments are:
A) One-dimensional
B) Multi-dimensional
C) Only used for children under the age of 5
D) Primarily used for diagnosing medical conditions
B) Multi-dimensional
What are 3 important factors that all developmental tests include?
- Multiple subsets- lots of items
- Mental Workload- lots of information to remember while tending to the child/client
- Must be detail oriented- note specific details of childs actions.
What is the purpose of using a “basal” and “ceiling” score in developmental assessments?
A) To determine the exact age of the child
B) To correct for prematurity
C) To establish the range of items a child can consistently pass and fail
D) To calculate the child’s developmental quotient
C) To establish the range of items a child can consistently pass and fail
Why is it important to calculate the exact age based on the date of the evaluation?
A) To ensure accurate scoring and interpretation of results
B) To determine eligibility for educational services
C) To identify developmental delays
D) To monitor the child’s progress over time
A) To ensure accurate scoring and interpretation of results
Basal score is the:
Entry level Score
Ceiling score is the:
Test Terminating Score
(when three items in a row are scored 0, the test or subset is terminated)
Which is the correct assessment for the facts given below?
- Norm referenced
- Birth to 7 years, 11 months (7:11)
- No correction for prematurity
- Standardized observation of performance
- includes structured, observational, and interview items
A) Battelle
B) E-LAP
C) Bayley
D) DAY-C
A) Battelle
