Q

What are the 5 venous return mechanisms?

A

Pocket valves- one way valves prevent back flow
Muscle pump- veins help squeeze blood back to heart
Respiratory pump- breathing deeper increases pressure in thorax and abdomen
Smooth muscle- contraction + relaxation
Gravity- blood from upper body is aided in its return by gravity

Q

How does increased venous return help improve the quality of performance during aerobic exercise?

A
Stretches the atrial wall
Greater stretch of myocardium
Increased SV
Increased cardiac output
More oxygen or blood to working muscles
