PE- Arousal (ELIAS) Flashcards
What is the definition of arousal?
The degree of readiness
What is somatic arousal?
Body/physiological
What is cognitive arousal?
Psychological (MENTAL)
What are the 3 theories?
Drive theory
Inverted U theory
Catastrophe theory
What does drive theory state?
As arousal increases, so does performance
Positive relationship
Linear relationship
What does dominant response mean?
Most learned behaviour
What does the inverted U theory believe?
As arousal increases, so does performance
Performance peaks at optimum level of arousal
Once past your optimum point any further arousal will decrease in performance
How can levels of arousal effect performance?
PERSONALITY- extroverts handle higher levels of arousal. Introverts low
SKILL TYPE- extroverts suited to gross + simple skills. Introverts fine + complex skills
ABILITY- low ability- low arousal, high ability, high arousal
What is cue utilisation?
Focusing on only what you need to know
What is selective attention?
Cutting out what you don’t need to know
What does the catastrophe theory state?
Somatic arousal increases which increases performance up to optimum
Cognitive arousal increases, performance drops immediately
If cognitive arousal is controlled, performance will increase again
