Preference for selection route of medication administration is based on
onset
patient presentation (scuh as LOA)
What are the 6 rights of medication administration?
- right patient
- right medication
- right dose
- right route
- right time
- right to know (i.e. why we want to give this drug, side effects, benefits, etc.)
Preparation for medication administration includes:
1) area is safe for administration
2) appropriate level of PPE is worn for application
3) area is well lit if preparing medication
4) all necessary equipment is present for prep/administration
5) proper dispoal of equipment after administration
Procedure for BGL testing via glucometer
1) any pt GCS <15, BGL would likely be indicated
2) prep site - swipe with alcohol wipe (if swab is dirty, use a new one to clean site and continuously do so until swab is clean) → pick site of finger tip (better blood flow)
- for < 1y.o: get BGL from heel
- let alcohol dry first or else can geenrate abnormal/incorrect reading has to be arterial blood
3) obtain sample via lancet
- normal is 3.6 - 6.2mmol/L
- we treat symptomatic hypoglycemia <4mmol/L (and for <2 y.o. it would have to be <3.0mmol/L)
