pavlov Flashcards
aim
pavlov aimed to investigate whether he could condition a dog to salivate to a completely unrelated stimulus- NS
he also aimed to study how the cerebral cortex works in making associations
sample
sample consisted of a single dog
weakness: lacks generalisability due to higher order functioning, decision making, rational thinking, qualitative differences between humans and dogs therefore findings based non whether a NS can be associated with an UCS to produce a CS, may not occur in humans.
strength: although using an animal also had benefits ?
procedure
standardised procedure:
restrained in garness, through one way mirror, tube carried saliva from dogs moth to contained, isolated room.
metronome played NS then the UCS food which the UCS produced UCR of salivating
paired multiple times (20) to elect salivationn without food just metronome (CR)
also W+R agree
replicate consistency
strength: the study had lots of control over extraneous variables to ensure that no other factors would impact the association process.
isolated cubical, free from all distractions such as noise, smells, vibrations, drafts, double Sealed doors therefore a clear cause and effect can be inferred between the association of the NS, metronome and the UCS, food led to the CR salivating to the sound of the metronome.
weakness: such high control not representative of real life where there is likely to be other noises and distractions which may impact the association and the same results may not occur, not representative
results
20 times or more elect salivation just from metronome
salivation 45 secobds 11 drops
only salivate if been oriented before food
dogs showed tumulus generalisation similar tiones similar but could discriminate when sounds were quite different
more similar, more salivation
conditioning sensitive to EV and ID’S
