capafons Flashcards
aim
aimed to investigate whether SD was an effective therapeutic treatment for a fear of flying snd whether this could be achieved through simulation
sample
control and treamtent group were matched on age, gender, pre treatment fear of flying self reported scores
treatment 20- 12 females 8 males control 12 females 9 males
treatment av age 29.65
strength: high internal validity, matched pairs limiting the effect of ppt variables skewing the validity of findings
weakness: used volunteer sample where ppts replied to a media advert advertising free SD. for fear of flying
-may share similar charcrhertisics such as confident and motivated therefore not representative of the wider population
procedure
- completed questionnaires on self reported level of fear pre treatment with questions like ‘how afraid of flying would you say you were’
same questionnaire for all
then tested individually on HR, palm temp and muscular tension when watching a video of a plane trip, in the same room, same temp, same distance from the screen
then were given 2x 1 hour sessions per week of SD, same relaxation techniques
between 12-15 sessions overall
then finally were taken on 2 flights and completed HR, palm rate and muscular tension measures before boarding and then self reported measures during
strength: standardised procedure therefore can test for consistency of findings
strength: obejective measures used gathering quant data limiting effect of researcher bias or social desirability, interpreted and develop strong c+e, link what are they …
weakness: although use self reported measures especially during the flight itself, could be producing social desrabilitity limiting vaidiity
results
found that self reported measures improved 25.6 to 13.3 in treatment group
SD successful 90% ppts improved
improve qual life successful treatment
