Patterns of Human Settlement Flashcards
Concentric Circle Theory
1925, Ernest Burgess (sociologist, Chicago). 1) CBD, 2) industrial, 3) transition - industrial and lower-class housing, 4) middle class housing, 5) commuter zone, higher class housing. Bid-rent curve.
Bid-Rent Curve
Burgess, Concentric Circle Theory. Explains land use patterns based on how much willing to pay for land, which is based on profits likely to receive from maintaining a business on that land.
Sector Theory
1939, Homer Hoyt (Chicago). Land uses vary based on transportation routes. Sectors radiate out from center of city.
Multiple Nuclei Theory
1945, Harris and Ullman. Cities develop a series of specific land use nuclei. Nucleus formed due to access to natural resources, clustering of similar uses, land prices, repelling power of land uses.
Central Place Theory
1933, Walter Christaller. Minimum market threshold to bring a firm to a city and max. range of people who are willing to travel to receive goods and services. Way of understanding the hierarchy of retail establishments in cities.
