Pathology: Amyloidosis Flashcards
What is amyloidosis?
- a group of diseases characterized by the deposition of amyloid
What is an amyloid?
Pathologic proteinaceous substance, deposited in the extracellular space in various tissues and organs
What is the sheet arrangement of amyloid fibrils?
Beta- pleated sheet
What are the 3 common forms of Amyloids
- Amyloid light chain (AL)
- amyloid associated (AA)
- A-Beta
Where are amlyoid light chain amyloids derived from?
derived from plasma cells; immunoglobulin light chains
Where are amyloid associated amyloids derived from?
derived from serum amyloid A protein made in liver (remember- acute phase protein!)
where are amlyoid beta amyloids found
in Alzheimer’s plaques and old dogs
Two classifications of amyloidosis
- primary amyloidsosis
- secondary amyoidosis
Which amyloid is associated with primary amyloidosis?
- amyloid light chains
- plasma cell tumors / multiple myeloma
Which amyloid is associated with secondary/reactive amyloidosis
amyloid associated light chain amyloids
- can be seen in persistent inflammation, such as tuberculosis or osteomyelitis
Amyloidsosis has a _____ of disease, depending on where it deposits
wide
T/F: amyloidosis can either be a generalized systemic disease which leads to multiorgan dysfunction or it can be a localized disease
true
what is the pathogenesis of amyloidosis?
abnormal folding of proteins => insoluble fibrils deposit in extracellular tissue => protein deposits interfere with normal cellular function
T/F: Renal amyloid deposits lead to proteinuria and renal failure
