Pathology 1.5 Lymphatic system Flashcards
Edema
Lymph symptom condition
Accumulation of fluid between cells in the tissues
Many different causes but frequently a weakened heart or other major organ failure
S&S: puffy, baggy skin, sometimes hot, sometimes cold. If chronic, may leave indentation “pitting edema”
All pitting edema contraindicated for massage, need doctor note
Can do with musculoskeletal injury
Lymph symptom condition

Edema
Lymphangitis
Lymphoma
Mononucleosis
Lymphangitis
Lymph symptom condition
Inflammation of lymphatic vessels usually due to infection
S&S: may begin with a simple cut or hangnail. But progresses into red streak along vessel, fever, chills, body aches and pains.
THIS INFECTION COULD DEVELOP INTO SEPTICEMIA OR “BLOOD POISONING”
OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD FOR MASSAGE THERAPISTS
Lymphoma
Lymph symptom condition
Cancer of the lymph nodes
S&S: NONTENDER SWOLLEN LYMPH NODES
NEED DOCTORS ORDER FOR MASSAGE
Mononucleosis
Lymph symptom condition
VIRAL INFECTION, attacks salivary glands and throat first, then moves into lymph nodes. May eventually affect liver and spleen.
S&S: initially fatigue (long incubation period when highly contagious). Then fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes.
Acute: contraindicated
Chronic: with doctor’s note
Immune system disorders
6
Allergies Chronic fatigue syndrome Fever Inflammation Lupus HIV/AIDS
Immune system
General
Specialized cells and chemicals throughout the body, rather than organs
Distinguish “self” from “non self” and eradicate anything that is “non self”
Allergies
Immune response overreacts inappropriately to a variety of triggers that are usually considered harmless
S&S: redness, itching. May be rapid onset. May progress to anaphylactic shock (emergency condition)
May need to adapt/change tools (lotions, sheets, etc)
Chronic fatigue syndrome
CFS
Collection of S&S that affect many systems of the body.
S&S: nonrestorative/debilitating fatigue amongst many other S&S
Massage indicated, careful with deep work
Fever
Abnormally high body temperature greater than 101
Usually response to viral or bacterial infection, but can also be caused by other types of tissue damage
MORE DATA IN HANDOUT
Massage is contraindicated
Inflammation
Body’s natural response to trauma to heal body
S&S: redness, swelling, pain, heat, loss of function
A protective response to injury or infection
Involves localized vascular, cellular and chemical reactions to isolate the area and resolve damage
Lupus
Autoimmune disease in which various types of tissues are attacked by the bodies own cells. Active flares usually brought on by triggers.
S&S: 11 different criteria spanning virtually every system of the body (need to have 4 to get diagnosis). Characteristic malar rash on face (unique to lupus)
Massage depends on severity DOCTOR’S NOTE REQUIRED
HIV/AIDS
THERAPISTS CAN POSE THREAT TO CLIENT IF SICK
Virus that targets and disables helper T cells
Body then becomes vulnerable to opportunistic diseases that are normally not a threat to healthy individuals
Spread via body fluids: blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk
S&S: initially flu-like symptoms, followed by a period of being a symptomatic until immune system has been inactivated, then followed by opportunistic infections
All stages indicate massage unless either client or therapist ill
MASSAGE CONTRAINDICATED IF EITHER CLIENT OR THERAPIST SICK
HIV
Human immunodeficiency virus
Get first and then AIDS
AIDS
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome
