Pathology 1.6. Circulatory System Flashcards
Best cardiovascular level question
What is your current activity level?
Circulatory disorder
Anytime someone has circulatory disorder such as
Poor circulation
Disorientation
Loss of feeling
Shortness of breath
SEE MD FOR FURTHER EVALUATION
Anemia
Shortage of red blood cells
Septicemia
Blood poisoning
Leukemia
Cancer of white blood cells
Embolism versus thrombus
Embolism is a traveling clot or collection of debris
Thrombus is a lodged clot
Embolism, thrombus
Composed of primarily blood
S&S: ON VENUS SIDE - pulmonary embolism (blood clot lodging in lungs). chest pain, shortness of breath, anxiety
ON THE ARTERIAL SIDE - depends on where blood was going
CLOT - counter indicated
HISTORY OF CLOTS - probably on blood thinners - DO NOT GO DEEP
NEED MD ORDER TO MASSAGE
Hematoma
bleeding into tissues
S&S: mildest form is a bruise. May be “gel-like” mass
LOCAL CONTRAINDICATION
Thrombophlebitis
Inflammation of veins due to blood clots
DO NOT MASSAGE
Deep vein thrombophlebitis (DVT)
Inflammation of deeper veins frequently in the legs
S&S: pain, heat, swelling, redness. if deeper, vein may just be pain.
TAKE GOOD HISTORY - musculoskeletal injury of DVT RISK FACTORS
DO NOT MASSAGE
DVT RISK FACTORS
Recent surgery
Bedridden
Pregnancy
Long trip in car or plane
Aneurysm
A localized bulge in the wall of a blood vessel
S&S: seldom any warning
NEED MD NOTE
Atherosclerosis
Hardening of the arteries due to deposits of substances (usually plaques/fats) that occlude the lumen
S&S: none until 75-80% occlusion is present. Frequently first sign is high blood pressure.
Hypertension
SILENT KILLER
Internal and external forces create high pressure in the blood vessels.
S&S: elevation greater than 140/90 measured by sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff)
NEED MD NOTE
Raynaud’s syndrome
Vasoconstriction (vasospasm) of arterioles, usually in fingers and toes.
S&S: affected areas turn whitish/blue
*MAY BE PRIMARY OR SECONDARY CONDITION
