Q

Embolism, thrombus

A

Composed of primarily blood

S&S: ON VENUS SIDE - pulmonary embolism (blood clot lodging in lungs). chest pain, shortness of breath, anxiety
ON THE ARTERIAL SIDE - depends on where blood was going

CLOT - counter indicated
HISTORY OF CLOTS - probably on blood thinners - DO NOT GO DEEP

NEED MD ORDER TO MASSAGE

Q

Deep vein thrombophlebitis (DVT)

A

Inflammation of deeper veins frequently in the legs

S&S: pain, heat, swelling, redness. if deeper, vein may just be pain.

TAKE GOOD HISTORY - musculoskeletal injury of DVT RISK FACTORS
DO NOT MASSAGE

Q

Atherosclerosis

A

Hardening of the arteries due to deposits of substances (usually plaques/fats) that occlude the lumen

S&S: none until 75-80% occlusion is present. Frequently first sign is high blood pressure.

Q

Hypertension

A

SILENT KILLER
Internal and external forces create high pressure in the blood vessels.

S&S: elevation greater than 140/90 measured by sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff)

Q

Raynaud’s syndrome

A

Q

Varicose veins

A

Can do light strokes on mild varicose veins

SEVERE, DISENTED VARICOSE VEINS CONTRINDICATED
NEVER DO DEEP PRESSURE

16
Q

Heart attack

A

Myocardial infaction, MI
Sudden obstruction in the flow through the coronary arteries (blood feeding the heart), causing some muscle to die

S&S: angina (early warning sign-goes away), chest pressure, pain in left shoulder or jaw, cool clammy skin (mostly men)
Women - indigestion

DEPENDS ON RECOVER - MD NOTE

17
Q

Angina

A

Not a heart attack

Blood vessels spasm

Stop activity and the pain stops

18
Q

Heart failure

A

Progressive loss of cardiac function due to age and/or cardiovascular disease

S&S: back up of fluids

DEPENDS - MD NOTE
