Parts of the Brain Flashcards
List the 3 parts making up the evolution of the brain theory
Reptilian, limbic, neocortex
Describe the “reptilian” part of the brain
Brain stem + cerebellum; controls automatic functions (instincts)
Describe the “limbic” part of the brain
Hypocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus; controls emotions, hormones
Describe the “neocortex” part of the brain
Cerebrum; higher level processing, thinking, allows humans to be more advanced/developed than other animals
What are the hills and grooves of the brain called?
Hills: gyri
Grooves: sulci
Describe the 2 hemispheres of the brain
Left: language, mathematical reasoning
Right: creativity, music, arts
What are the 3 main regions of the brain
Cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem
Frontal lobe
Cerebrum; personality, planning, higher-level thinking (problem solving, action-consequence)
Parietal lobe
Cerebrum; spatial memory, sensory processing, memory, motor control
Occipital lobe
Cerebrum; visual processing
Temporal lobes
Cerebrum; auditory processing, (some) memory
Ventricles
Cerebrum; cerebral-spinal fluid, surrounding brain and spinal cord
Corpus callosum
Cerebrum; connects R-L hemispheres
Thalamus
Cerebrum; relays sensory, motor info
Amygdala
Cerebrum; emotional processing, fear
Pineal body/gland
Cerebrum; produces melatonin, controls sleep/awake cycles (circadian rythm)
Hypothalamus
Cerebrum; internal thermostat regulating hunger, thirst, fight or flight, rest, digest, mating, producing certain hormones
Midbrain
Brain stem; reflex, reaction to light, stimuli to sound (colliculous)
Pons
Brain stem; coordinates movements on each side of body
Medulla oblongata
Brain stem; controls vital automatic functions like heart rate, breathing, blood pressure
Cerebellum
Coordinates sensory/muscle activity, allows for balance, smooth movement, controlled speech
