LIving Things Flashcards
Name the characteristics of living things
- Organization
- Homeostasis
- Movement
- Metabolism
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Response to stimuli
- Excretion
- Adaptation/evolution
Describe organization in living things
Have cells with structures
How can organization in living things differ
Unicellular vs multicellular organisms
Uni: one cell organism (bacteria)
Multi: multi cell organisms (animals)
Describe homeostasis in living things
Capable of maintaining an internal steady state in organisms no matter the surrounding environment
Ex: cooling off in the heat (sweat) or staying warm in the cold (goosebumps)
Describe metabolism in living things
Ability to eat + use nutrition as energy, used to: grow, move, respond to stimuli, etc
Describe growth in living things
Body/body parts can grow/regenerate
Ex: chameleon having tail cut off
Describe reproduction in living things
Can reproduce a.sexually
Asex: copy their own DNA
Sex: combine gametes
Describe response to stimuli in living things
Irritability: response to stimuli in environment
Ex: reflexes, moths going towards lights, animals following smells of food
Describe movement in living things
Ability to move their bodies (not necessarily from one point to another)
