Q

Describe fungi kingdom (8)

A
  • Majorly multicellular, some unicellular
  • Eukaryotic
  • Cell wall made of chitin
  • Most terrestrial
  • Not motile, transported via spores
  • Reproduce sexually/asexually
  • Heterotrophic
  • Parasitic, predatory, decomposer, mutualistic

Q

How do fungi eat?

A

Heterotrophs. Release digestive juices that absorb broken down nutrients
Saprotrophs: dead, decaying matter
Parasites: obtain nutrients from host
Symbionts: mutually benefical
Predatory: carnivorous

Q

Describe asexual reproduction in fungi

A

Mycelium fragment: piece breaks off and grows elsewhere
Budding: single-cell organisms (ex: yeast)

Q

Describe sexual reproduction in fungi

A

Hyphae (haploids) merge, producing fruiting bodies containing spores. Sporangium buds, haploid spores released and transported in air. Spores lands in an area with the right conditions, grows hyphae and becomes new organism.

Q

What are the 4 fungi classifications? What are they based on?

A
  • Method of reproduction, type of fruiting body (where spores come from)
  • Club Fungi, Zygospore, Sack, Lichens (symbiotes)

Q

Describe Club Fungi

A
  • Produce mushroom structure during sexual reproduction
  • Spores produced in mushroom head
  • Mushrooms grow where hyphae from different fungus organisms exchange genetic info

Q

Describe Zygospore fungi

A
  • Reproduce asexually
  • Can reproduce sexually using zygospores IF in bad conditions
    Ex: mold from old food

Q

Describe Sac fungi

A
  • Most reproduce sexually
  • Develop finger-like sacks called asci during reproduction
    Ex: mildew, yeast
    Yeast reproduce asexually (Budding)

Q

Describe lichens (symbiotes)

A
  • Fungi have mutualistic relationship with photosynthetic organisms (algae, cyanobacteria)
  • A/C photosynthesize, produce simple sugars as food for fungus
  • Fungus creates structure for A/C to live in by creating optimal conditions
