- aerobic exercise minimum 150 minutes/week (30 minutes 5 days a week)

What are the benefits of exercise for a pt with DM?
- decrease insulin resistance and blood glucose
- weight loss
- decrease triglycerides and LDL, increase HDL
- improve BP and circulation
What can happen if a pt with DM starts with strenuous activity rather than starting low and slow?
-it can cause stress on the body and increase blood glucose instead of lowering it
How long can the glucose lowering effect be after exercise?
up to 48 hours after
When should and shouldn’t a pt with DM exercise?
- exercise 1 hour after a meal and snack during exercise to prevent hypoglycemia
- do not exercise if blood glucose level is >300 and if ketones are present in urine
When might bariatric surgery be an option for a pt with T2DM?
- when lifestyle and drug therapy management is difficult
- if BMI >35
Who qualifies for a pancreas transplant?
-pt with T1DM who has had or is going to have a kidney transplant
What are some pros and cons of pancreas transplant?
Pros: -eliminates need for exogenous insulin, SMBG, and dietary restrictions -eliminates acute complications Cons: -long-term complications persist -lifelong immunosuppression therapy
