part 12 Flashcards
thickening of vessel membranes in capillaries and arterioles
microvascular angiopathy
What are the 3 types of microvascular angiopathy?
- retinopathy
- nephropathy
- dermopathy
What is different about macro and microvascular angiopathy?
microvascular angiopathy (retinopathy, nephropathy, and dermopathy) are specific to diabetes.
When do microvascular angiopathy problems appear?
10-20 years after diagnosis
microvascular damage to retina
diabetic retinopathy
What is the most common cause of new cases of adult blindness?
diabetic retinopathy
What type of diabetic retinopathy is more sever and which is more common?
- nonproliferative: more common
- proliferative: more severe
partial occlusion of small blood vessels in retina causes microaneurysms
nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy
- involves retina and vitreous humor
- new blood vessels formed (neovascularization): very fragile and bleeds easily
- can cause retinal detachment
proliferative diabetic retinopathy
How often should diabetic pts get eye examinations?
annual with dilation
What are the treatments for diabetic retinopathy?
- Laser photocoagulation (destroys ischemic areas of retina)
- vitrectomy (aspiration of blood, membrane, and fibers inside the eye)
- drugs to block action of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)
