Q

Describe how a fertility drug, can treat infertility? [4]

A
  • a fertility drug, can be used to treat fertility.
  • This is because, FSH and LH are given to a woman, since they may not produce enough follicle stimulating hormone [FSH], to stimulate the maturation of eggs in the ovaries.
  • this artificial FSH, then stimulates the maturation of eggs in the ovaries.
  • ; LH is then given, to stimulate ovulation.
  • [therefore, this increases a woman’s chance of being pregnant, through sexual intercourse]

Q

What’s the process of IVF ? [6]

A

1) the mother is first treated with FSH and LH, causing several eggs to mature.

2) these matured eggs are then collected from the mother.

3) and at this point, sperm from the father is collected, and it’s then used to fertilise the eggs, in the laboratory

4) in the laboratory, these fertilised eggs then divide, to develop in tiny balls of cells known as embryos.

5) and, these embryos are know inserted into the mother’s uterus [womb]

6) these embryos can then develop in the mother, in the usual way [with the hope, it will implant and eventually develop into a baby]
