Parotid Region Flashcards
What is the posterior boundary of the Parotid region?
Mastoid process and SCM muscle
What is the anterior boundary of the parotid region?
Ramus of the mandible
What is the superior boundary of the parotid region?
External acoustic meatus and TMJ
Which muscles make up the bed of the parotid region?
Posterior belly of digastric and stylohyoid.
Describe the parotid capsule and it’s innervation.
This is continuous with the deep fascia of the neck and that of SCM posteriorly and Massester anteriorly. It is thick superiorly and thin deep to the gland. It’s innervation is from the greater auricular nerve from the cervical plexus which contains nerve roots of C2 and C3.
Describe the course of the auriculotemporal nerve.
This nerve emerges in V3 through foramen ovale before branching off in the infratemporal fossa. It splits and passes either side of the middle meningeal artery before reforming and coursing posteriorly. It ascends superiorly anterior to the external acoustic meatus but posterior to TMJ.
What nerve fibres are carried by the auriculotemporal nerve to the parotid gland?
GVE of CN IX for secretomotor
GSA to substance of the gland (true trigeminal fibres).
What are the branches of the facial nerve in the parotid gland? What do they supply?
Temporal Zygomatic Buccal Marginal mandibular Cervical Supply to muscles of facial expression.
Name the veins within the parotid gland.
Superficial temporal
Maxillary vein from pterygoid venous plexus,
These combine to form retromandibular vein.
What vessels contribute to the external jugular vein?
Posterior branch of retromandibular and posterior auricular
What veins of the face drain via the common facial vein into the IJV?
Facial vein and anterior part of retromandibular vein.
Name the arteries found within the parotid gland
External carotid artery, superficial temporal artery, maxillary artery
