Q

Describe the course of the SVE fibres to the parotid gland.

A

These are from the glossopharyngeal nerve and pass through the jugular foramen before passing into the middle ear cavity and running on the medial surface of the tympanic membrane as a plexus. The nerve reforms and enters the petrous part of the temporal bone as the lesser pterosal nerve. This exits back into the cranial cavity through the hiatus for for the lesser pterosal nerve and then exits with V3 through foramen ovale to Synapse in the Otic ganglion. Following this fibres run with the auriculotemporal nerve (V3) to the gland.

14
Q

Describe the route of SVE of VII to the palatine salivary glands.

A

These exit through the internal acoustic meatus to the geniculate ganglion and then run through the petrous part of the temporal bone as the greater pterosal nerve. This then passes into the pterygopalatine canal as the nerve of the pterygopalatine canal and then into the pterygopalatine fossa and synapses in the pterygopalatine ganglia. Post synaptic fibres run inferiorly with the palatine Nerves.

16
Q

Describe the course of post-synaptic fibres to the lacrimal gland. From the pterygopalatine ganglion.

A

These fibres run superiorly along the maxillary nerve back towards the trigeminal ganglion and turn to run on the zygomatic branch of the maxillary nerve. This branches and the fibres run with zygomaticotemporal nerve to the lacrimal nerve of V1 where they continue their course to the lacrimal gland.

17
Q

In which bone is the pterygoid canal found?

A

Sphenoid

18
Q

SVE to the nasal glands is from which cranial nerve?

A

Facial

19
Q

What nerve carries sympathetic fibres to the nasal glands?

A

A periarterial plexus around the ICA carries sympathetic fibres into the cranial cavity and then this forms one nerve… the deep pterosal nerve which runs and joins with the greater pterosal nerve to form the nerve of the pterygoid canal.

20
Q

Where do pterosal nerves run?

A

In the petrous part of the temporal bone.

21
Q

What nerve carries autonomic supply to the eye.

A

Occulomotor

22
Q

Which autonomic ganglion is associated with the eye?

A

Ciliary.

23
Q

What are the parasympathetically supplied muscles of the eye?

A

Ciliaris, constrictor pupillae

24
Q

Which division of the autonomic nervous system supplies dilator pupillae?

A

Sympathetic

25
Q

Which division ofthe autonomic nervous system supplies constrictor pupillae?

A

Parasympathetic

26
Q

What is horners syndrome?

A

Loss of sympathetic supply to the eye. This leads to a constricted pupil and partial ptosis due to the loss of the superior tarsal muscle.

27
Q

Which cervical ganglia is located at C6?

A

Middle

28
Q

Where is the middle cervical ganglia located?

A

C6

29
Q

Where is the superior cervical ganglia located?

A

C2-C3

30
Q

Where is the inferior cervical ganglia located? What can it also be called?

A

C7-T1. This is also called the stellate ganglion and is a fusion of inferior cervical, and superior thoracic ganglia,

31
Q

How are sweat glands in the skin Supplied by sympathetic fibres?

A

Grey rami communicantes carry fibres from the sympathetic ganglia into spinal nerves which supply the skin.

32
Q

Where is the geniculate ganglion located?

A

Petrous part of the temporal bone.
