Mouth And tongue Flashcards
Where do the lingual artery and vein run in relation to the hyoglossus muscle?
Artery runs deep to this structure whilst vein runs superficial.
What are the 3 extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Styloglossus, Hyoglossus, Genioglossus.
What is the nerve supply to geniohyoid?
C1
What is the nerve supply to genioglossus?
Hypoglossal nerve
Name 2 muscles supplied by C1 fibres
Thyrohyoid, Geniohyoid
What is the innervation of the infrahyoid muscles?
Ansa cervicalis
Describe the oral vestibule.
This is the space found anterior and lateral to the dental arches between this and the cheek/ lips. This spaces is split into upper and lower fornix vestibuli.
What is a frenulum and where are they commonly found?
This is the name for a tight piece of connective tissue which attaches the gingivae and the cheek/ lips. Most commonly this is seen in the midline but placement of others is highly variable.
What is the oropharyngeal isthmus?
This is a space bounded by the palatopharyngeal and palatoglossal arches.
How does the oral cavity communicate with the vestibule when the teeth are occluded?
Retromolar space.
Which structure in the mucosa produces the sublingual fold?
Submandibular duct
Describe general and special sensation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
GSA - V3 Lingual Nerve
SVA - Facial from Chorda Tympani
Describe sensory innervation to the posterior 2/3 of the tongue.
GSA - IX
SVA - IX
Describe the rich blood supply of the tongue.
This is formed from the lingual artery which splits into deep and sublingual parts after running deep to hyoglossus. These vessels anastomose to ensure that the tongue has a rich blood supply.
Which major vessel does venous drainage of the tongue go to?
Internal Jugular Vein.
This is following drainage into the venae commitantes before forming the lingual vein which drains into the internal jugular vein.
