Cranial Cavity Flashcards
What structure runs through foramen spinosum?
Middle Meningeal Artery
What structure runs through foramen lacerum?
This is cartilage filled in life and the internal carotid artery runs over this structure.
Where is the pterygoid canal?
This runs anteriorly from an opening in foramen lacerum
What is the Clivus?
This is the sphenooccipital synchondrosis in the base of the skull which plays a role in lengthening of the skull base.
Where is the cavernous sinus?
It is lateral to the pituitary gland
Name the structures contained within the cavernous sinus.
Nerves CN III, IV,V1, V2, VI
Venous plexus
Internal Carotid Artery
Name the sinuses that drain into the confluence of sinuses. Where does blood go after this?
Superior saggital and straight sinus. Blood drains away from this in the right and left transverse sinuses.
What is the continuation of the Transverse sinus?
The sigmoid sinus when it is joined by he superior pterosal sinus
What structures drain into the superior pterosal sinus?
Ophthalmic veins into the cavernous sinus.
What structures combine to form the internal jugular vein?
The inferior pterosal sinus and the sigmoid sinus.
What venous structure lies on the clivus?
The basilar plexus which drains into the inferior petrosal sinus
In which space does CSF circulate?
Sub-arachnoid space
What are Diplopic veins?
These drain through the bone of the skull providing a connection between dural venous sinuses and veins of the scalp,
What is a subarachnoid granulation?
This is a structure whichpermits drainage of CSF back into the venous system. They are located in the venous sinuses.
What meningeal layers do venous sinuses lie in?
Generally they lie between the 2 layers of the dura.
