Parental care Flashcards
Describe the priority of birds that live long
Protect themselves - have smaller clutches of eggs, know they can probably mate again
Describe the priority of short lived birds
Have more to gain by protecting their young bc they may not get another chance
What happens with short lived robins
Short lived robins reduced their nest visits more than the thrushes. Opposite for an adult predator Look at notes for this
Why is there more maternal parental care than paternal
Egg investment… takes more time, energy, etc NOTES
Describe the cost benefit ratio
Female maternity 100%
Male paternity might be 80%
According to cost benefit ratio, what happens if the cost of parental care is the same for both females and males in terms of energy and inability to find new mates
The ratio is in the females favor, explaining why females provide more parental care than males
Describe the egg incubation process in cichlids
Both male and females may mouth brood fertilized eggs
Describe the parenting style of sticklebacks and why
Male sticklebacks care for up to 10 clutches of eggs at a time, females could only to one
This is less cost for males
What is the benefit of male parental care in brooding fish
Females cant forage while guarding eggs, so they dont grow as big, and egg quality usually suffers
What is a general benefit of male parental care for most animals
Male parental behavior may be especially attractive to females, so benefit is greater
Which animals tend to live in crowded conditions
Bats, seals, rodents
UNDER PARENTAL DISCRIMINATION SLIDE, ADD MORE FROM NOTES
What are the three aspects of parental recognition of kin
Production
Perception
Action
What is production in kin recognition
Offspring produce a cue that signals their identity
What is perception in kin recognition
Parents able to detect the cue and recognize it through comparison to some reference
