Metronidazole
A
- Giardia
- Entamoeba histolytica
- Trichomonas Vaginalis
2
Q
Tinidazole (Tindamax), USA
A
• Giardia
3
Q
Spiramycin
A
• Toxoplasma gondii (prophylaxis)
4
Q
Praziquantel
A
- CNS NOTES say for neurocysticercosis caused by taenia solium although PARASITE NOTES say this wouldn’t work and should just do for neurocysticercosis caused by taenia saginata
- Trematodes (echinococcus in dogs): includes schistosomas
- Clonorchis sinensis
- Paragonimus westermani (don’t think we covered, snail is intermediate host, get from raw crab, shrimp (paste, etc.))
5
Q
Niclosamide
A
- Taenia solium (use for for worm not neurocysticercosis)
* (unclear about whether it’s used for Taenia saginata)
6
Q
Corticosteroids (general)
A
- Neurocystercicosis
- Toxocara canis (probably to decrease swelling of ocular and visceral larva migrans. Get via dog ownership/soil transmission, geophagia, pica)
7
Q
Triclabendazole (livertriportal triad)
A
• Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) (young flukes damage liverget severe headache, backache, chills and fever. Adult flukes cause atrophy of portal vessels, hemorrhage and secondary pathological conditions that may be lethal)
8
Q
Albendazole
A
- Geohelminths
- Ancylostoma caninum (probably to treat cutaneous larva migrans)
- Toxocara canis (probably to treat ocular and visceral larva migrans)
- Neurocysticercosis caused by taenia solium
- Echinococcus granulosus and multilocularis (use albendazole for complicated cysts. Wait and watch for cysts without protoscolioses (not dangerous). Third option for treatment is PAIR (puncture, aspiration, injection, re-aspiration))
9
Q
Mebendazole
A
- Geohelminths (ancyclostoma duodenale, ascaris, trichuris)
* Strongyloides stercoralis (probably to treat larva currens, usually confined to trunk)
10
Q
Thiabendazole
A
- Strongyloides stercoralis
* Ancylostoma caninum (topical)
11
Q
Ivermectin
A
- Geohelminths
- Strongyloides stercoralis (better than other drugs for it)
- Ancylostoma caninum
