Explain the nature of Greece.
Borders the high Mediterranean sea, many high mountains, rocky grounds and islands.
There was not really a lot of fertile land because of their nature, how did they solve this?
They herded sheeps, and goats, they grew grain and even some olives and figs or they had to buy food from other places.
What was a more drastic measure to make a living?
They started a new city in places with better soil, or a colony.
Why was the sea really important for the Greeks?
Trade by land was difficult so they sailed to different lands to start colonies, to trade or te fight.
What is a polis and what is plural for it?
A city-state, had it’s own government coins and army, plural is poleis
What would yo do in a polis, what was the first thing?
Follow the road to a gate in the city wall, you ask if you are allowed in the city, because if someone was ill they kept them out so the disease wouldn’t spread.
What is the second thing you would do in a polis?
You goes to the agora, a kind of market, you sell your goods and listen to the latest news.
Why got political news a lot of attention?
The greeks thought everyone should be involved in politics.
What could you also do at the agora?
Socialise, or debate. you could even get lesson in debating grom one of the philosophers.
What is the acropolis?
The inner keep of the city on a hill, with lots of temples. If there was a war they could run to the acropolis.
Why did the Greeks visited temples?
They all had their favourite god, they visited temples to pray or to bring sacrifies, they hoped that that would help them in live.
What were the dark ages?
Years where no writing was used.
What is a oral tradition?
When it’s passed from one person to the next and not written down.
