Paper 2: Specialised Plant Cells Flashcards
What does the phloem contain?
Sieve tube elements and companion cells
What are the adaptions of sieve tube elements?
Have very little cytoplasm - lots of space to transport sucrose / other nutrients
What are the adaptations of companion cells?
Contain lots of mitochondria to supply them with energy for respiration
Are xylem cells alive?
No - dead
What are the functions of the dead cells?
No cytoplasm or cells content which means there is more space for water to move through
What are the holes in xylems called?
Pits
Where are pits found in a xylem?
In the walls - allows water to move out
What are xylem walls strengthened with?
Lignin rings - makes them strong and prevents them from collapsing
Why do xylem cells have no ends?
So they can form a long tube that water can flow through easily
