Paper 2: Humans Effects On Ecosystems Flashcards
What is fish farming?
Growing one kind of fish in an area
What happens during fish farming?
Fish are fed and waste products is removed from their tanks
What are the negatives of fish farming?
Waste can pollute area, changing conditions so local species die out
Disease from the farmed fish can spread to wild fish and kill them
What are the positives of fish farming?
Reduces fishing of wildfish
What are non-indigenous species?
Organisms that are not found naturally in the area
What are the negatives of non-indigenous species?
May produce rapidly
May out compete native species for food
What are the positive of non-indigenous species?
May provide food for native species
What is eutrophication?
When fertilisers are added to fields for crops which may get into streams and rivers adding phosphates and nitrates to water
What can eutrophication lead to?
Loss of biodiversity in nearby water
What are the steps that happens due to eutrophication?
Eutrophication causes water plants and algae to grow quickly
Plants and algae cover water surfaces and block light to deeper water
Deeper plant can’t get light, so die
Bacteria decomposes dying plants and take oxygen from water
Not enough oxygen for fish so they die
