Paper 1: Human Defeneces Flashcards
What are chemical defences that are produced do?
Kill pathogens / make them inactive
What do physical barriers do?
Make it hard for pathogens to enter the body
What are examples of chemical defences?
Lysozymes
Hydrochloric acid
What does lysozymes do?
Kills bacteria by digesting their cell walls
Where can you find lysozymes?
In tears, saliva and mucus
What are examples of physical barriers?
Skin
Cilia
Mucus
What does unbroken skin do?
Forms a protective barrier because it’s too thick for most pathogens to get through
What does mucus and cilia do?
In lining of lungs and move in a wave like motion moving mucus and trapped pathogens out of the lungs towards the back of the throat where it is swallowed
What does hydrochloric acid do?
Kills pathogens in food and drink
