Paper 1: Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
A type of cell division that take places in several stages
Where does mitosis occur?
In body cells
What does mitosis produce?
2 identical daughter cells
What are the stages of mitosis?
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
What happens during interphase?
Chromosomes start to become visible
DNA has already been copied
What happens during prophase?
Chromosomes condense - each chromosome consists of 2 chromatids
What happens during metaphase?
Nuclear membrane breaks down
Chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell
What happens during anaphase?
Chromatids separate
one chromatid from each pair is pulled to each pole of the cell
Chromatids can now be called chromosomes
What happens during telophase?
Spindle fibres disappear
New nuclear membrane forms round each group of chromosomes
Cell splits into 2 (cytokinesis)
What stag is the cell in most of the time?
Interphase
What is mitosis used for?
Growth, repair and asexual reproduction
