PAPER 2 - required practicals Flashcards
1
Q
- reaction time - aim
A
The aim of this experiment is to determine whether a factor such as caffeine or background noise affects reaction times.
2
Q
- plant hormones - aim
A
Investigate the effect of light or gravity on the growth of newly germinated seedlings
3
Q
- plant hormones - method
A
- cotton wool to 3 petri dishes w same amount of water
- add 10 seeds to each and put in warm place
- allow to germinate and add water if wood dries
- then check all have same amount of seeds then put one on full light window sill. one in dark cupboard and one in partial light
- every day for a week measure height w ruler and record
- calc the mean of each day and compare ehights in the dif location
4
Q
- sampling quadrats - aim
A
meauring population size in a habitat of a common species
5
Q
- sampling quadrats - method
A
- find point in field to start
- use random number generator to find coordinated for your first quadrant
- go back to starting point and find 14 more places
- repeat this in a dif place and compare how the disrribution of the species is different in the 2 dif locations
6
Q
3.2 sampling transects - method
A
- put tape measure the length of the area being meaudred
- put quadrat on the 0cm mark and count the daisies here
- record the abiotic factors
- place every 5m and count daisies and record conditions
- repeat in 4 more transects
7
Q
- decay - aim
A
To investigate the effect of temperature on the rate of decay of fresh milk by measuring pH change.
8
Q
- decay - method
A
- add lipase to test tube
- add milk to dif test tube
- add 5 drops of phenolphthalein to milk
- add sodium carbonate to this milk tube - alkali = goes pink
- both tubes in water bath at 30 degrees
- use a pipette and put the milk into the lipase and star stopwatch
- stir and the enzyme will star to decompose milk
- when solution loses its pink colour stop clock and record how long it took
- repeat at different temps
- calculate the rate - 1000/time
