paper 2 Flashcards
how can farmers increase the amount of nitrates in the soil
crop rotation-different crops are grown all year in a cycle and involves nitrogen-fixing crops which helps put nitrates in the soil for the next crop
fertilisers-spreading animal manure or compost on fields recycles nutrients left in the plant and animal waste to return back into the soil through decomposition.artificial fertilisers r expensive
what are the fur types of bacteria
decomposers-decompose protein and urea into ammonia to make ammonium ions in solution that plants use
nitrifying bacteria-turn ammonia in decaying matter into nitrites and then into nitrates
nitrogen-fixing bacteria-turn atmospheric nitrogen gas into ammonia to make ammonia ions
denitrifying bacteria turn nitrates back into nitrogen gas-found in waterlogged soils
what is the nitrogen cycle
when lightning strikes the nitrogen from the atmosphere and fixes it to nitrates which are absorbed by the roots of trees to make proteins so the plant can grow
nitrogen-fixing bacteria enter the soil to convert nitrogen into ammonia. Nitrifying bacteria turns the ammonia into nitrites and they also convert nitrites to nitrates which are absorbed by the plant-mutualistic relationship bacteria get food from plant and plant gets nitrogen ions
when an animal eats the plant and urinates the urea (waste) is gone to the soil. When the animal dies the decomposer breaks down urea and proteins in the sheep into ammonia
