paper 1 specification 6 Flashcards
what is darwins theory of evolution
predators and competition for resources and disease affect an organism’s chance of surviving and reproducing. Individuals with characteristics best suited to the environment have a better chance of survival so are more likely to breed. The alleles will be passed on to the next generation and the beneficial characteristics become more common in the population.
how do bacteria provide evidence for evolution?
resistant bacteria are better able to survive so it reproduces more and live longer. antibiotic resistance passed on shows natural selection. Provides evidence as bacteria become better adapted to the environment in which antibiotics are present and the characteristics become common
facts about ardi
lived 4.4 million years ago
-climbed trees
-long arms and short legs like an ape and her brain size was like a chimp
-walked upright
facts about lucy
lived 3.2 million years ago
-arched feet, more adapted to walking than climbing (walked upright)
-legs and arms size is between humans and apes
-the brain is bigger than Ardi
Leakey’s discovery of fossils from 1.6 million years ago
homo erectus:
- more human than Lucy
-short arms and long legs and his brain size was larger than Lucy
-the structure of their feet showed he was better at walking upright
how did the homo habilis make their tools?
made pebble tools by hitting rocks to make sharp flakes to scrape meat from bones
how did the homo erectus make their tools?
sculpted rocks into shapes to make tools like hand axes to hunt
describe the homo neanderthalensis tools
more complex tools.evidence of wooden spears
describe the homo sapiens tools
arrowheads and fish hooks
how can these tools be dated from their environment
