Q

How are plants able to survive in a sealed glass container

A
  • light energy is the only requirement from outside terrarium
  • respiration provides CO2 and water for photosynthesis
  • ATP still produced/ energy provided for cell activities

Q

Describe the homeostatic mechanisms that regulate water content of blood

A

Mechanism of ADH
- ADH targets cells of collecting ducts
- release of second messenger
- vesicles with aquaporins fuse with plasma membrane
- increase in permeability of collecting ducts wall
- more water moves into cells

Role of receptors
Sensory receptors
Located in hypothalamus
- osmoreceptors
- detect changes in osmotic pressure
- respond to effects of osmosis by shrinking or swelling

Posterior pituitary
ADH made in hypothalamus
- moves down axon to posterior pituitary
Stored in vesicles
Action potentials in neurosecretory cells
ADH released by posterior pituitary
By exocytosis
