Paper 1 Mock HTI Flashcards
What type of proteins are channel proteins
Intrinsic
Why doers lymph contain more protein than tissue fluid
Because of antibody production
How are plants able to survive in a sealed glass container
- light energy is the only requirement from outside terrarium
- respiration provides CO2 and water for photosynthesis
- ATP still produced/ energy provided for cell activities
Why can plants in deep water survive where other plants cannot
They have pigments that absorb shorter wavelengths of light
- these wavelengths can penetrate water to greater depths
What are some banned substances (performance enhancing drugs)
Anabolic steroids
Narcotic drugs
Stimulants
How is furosemide able to act as a masking agent to banned substances
Increase removal of drugs
Describe the homeostatic mechanisms that regulate water content of blood
Mechanism of ADH
- ADH targets cells of collecting ducts
- release of second messenger
- vesicles with aquaporins fuse with plasma membrane
- increase in permeability of collecting ducts wall
- more water moves into cells
Role of receptors
Sensory receptors
Located in hypothalamus
- osmoreceptors
- detect changes in osmotic pressure
- respond to effects of osmosis by shrinking or swelling
Posterior pituitary
ADH made in hypothalamus
- moves down axon to posterior pituitary
Stored in vesicles
Action potentials in neurosecretory cells
ADH released by posterior pituitary
By exocytosis
