Pancreatic Islet Histology Flashcards
Where are the islet cells most concentrated in the pancreas?
More in tail
What are the four important islet cells for Dr. Downing and what do they secrete?
Alpha cells (glucagon) Beta cells (insulin) Delta cells (somatostatin) PP or F cells (pancreatic polypeptide)
What is the abundance of cells in the pancreas in descending order?
Beta 70%
Alpha 20%
Delta <10%
PP/F ~1%
What is the purpose of alpha cells?
glucagon to raise blood sugar
What is the purpose of beta cells?
insulin to decrease blood sugar and increase protein
What is the purpose of delta cells?
Somatostatin to suppress A and B cells via paracrine
Reduce alimentary tract/gall bladder smooth muscle contraction via endocrine
What is the purpose of PP cells?
Inhibit enzymatic secretion from exocrine pancreas
Relaxes gall bladder resulting in decreased bile secretion
