Pain Flashcards
What are the different types of pain?
Nociceptive
Inflammatory
Pathological
Skin pain?
Well localised
Pickling, stabbing, burning
Muscle pain?
Poorly localised
Aching, tender, cramping, stabbing, burning
Visceral pain?
Poorly localised
Dull, vague, nausea, fullness
How does referred pain work?
Some visceral and skin afferent said converge on the same spinothalamic neurone.
Brain interprets as pain being from skin distant to organ
What fibres make up nociceptors?
C fibres
Alpha delta fibres
Which nociceptive fibres are fast?
Alpha delta
Which nociceptive fibres are slow?
C fibres
Classification of alpha delta fibres?
TypeI (high threshold) - require strong mechanical stimuli.
Type II - noxious mechanical and heat stimuli. Sensitive to capsaicin.
Classification of C fibres?
C-MH
C-M
C-H
C-MiHi
C-MH?
Mechanical and heat stimuli
Sensitive to capsaicin
C-M?
Mechanical stimuli
Insensitive to heat and capsaicin
C-H?
Noxious heat stimuli
Insensitive to mechanical
Sensitive to capsaicin
C-MiHi?
Insensitive to heat and mechanical stimuli
Sensitive to capsaicin
