Auditory/ Vestibular Flashcards
What determines loudness?
Amplitude
What determines pitch?
Frequency
What is timbre?
Quality of the sound
Action of the Middle ear?
Amplification
How is middle ear adapted for amplification?
High ratio of area of ear drum to stapes foot plate
Lever actions of ossicles
Buckling of eardrum
What detects angular acceleration?
Semicircular canals
What detects linear acceleration?
Saccule and utricle - otolith organs
How many degrees of freedom in detecting orientations?
6
- 3 translational
- 3 rotational
What are the semicircular canals filled with?
Endolymph
What happens in the semicircular canals on movements?
Movements causes the endolymph to circulate, displacing the cupula.
Displaced cupula moves the kinocili all in same direction so either excited or inhibited together.
Utricle detects movement in what plane?
Horizontal plane
Saccule detects movement in what plane?
Vertical / Sagittal plane
Different between hair cells in semicircular canal and otolith?
All in same direction in semicircular canal
In all directions in the otolith organs
What are the 3 vestibular reflexes?
Vestibulo-ocular reflex
Vestibulo- colic reflex
Vestibular-spinal reflex
What does vestibulo-ocular reflex do?
Keeps eyes still in space when head moves
