Acute:
- <7 days
- little tissue damage
Chronic:
- >3 months
- not always identifiable cause
Breakthrough:
- comes and goes
- flares despite treatment
Etiology
Cancer:
- bone
- aching
- deep
Burn:
- superficial
- tingling
Pathology
Neuropathic:
- peripheral nerve pain
- numbness, tingling, burning
Nociceptive:
- tissue and organ pain
Visceral:
- organ pain
Characteristics
Idiopathic:
- no identifiable cause
Phantom:
- amputation
- pain where limb was
Referred:
- pain in one spot but felt in another
- ex. gallbladder
Radiating:
- located in one area that travels
- ex. sciatic nerve
Intractable:
- doesn’t go away regardless of treatment
