P&P Flashcards

1
Q

Explain the Great Vowel Shift and its consequences.

A
  • The GVS began around 15th century
  • Mixture of push and pull factors: mid vowels raised, pushed up the high vowels
  • Each non-high vowel moving for one height, high vowels became diphthongs
  • All MidEng LONG VOWELS changed
  • GVS is the reason why English spelling differs so much from English pronunciation
