Oxygen Dependant Pathways Flashcards
What is the Link reaction?
Pyruvate + CoA + NAD+ = acetyl CoA + CO2 + NAHDH + H+
Enzyme- pyruvate dehydrogenase
What does a a deficiency in pyruvate dehydrogenase or any of is co-enzymes lead to?
Lactic acidosis
Pyruvate cannot be turned into acetyl coA so the anaerobic pathway occurs more which produces lactic acid
What is produced per glucose molecule in the Krebs cycle?
6 NADH
2 FAD
2 GTP
How do uncouplers work?
They dissipate the proton gradient by increasing the permeability of H+ to the membrane
How do inhibitors work?
Thy block electron transport by blocking the action of oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor meaning the pmf cannot be formed
Give an example of an inhibitor?
Cyanide
How much ATP is produced overall from glucose?
32
How is brown adipose tissue used in newborns to keep warm?
Uncoupling proteins are activate by noradrenaline- released when body temp falls
Noradrenaline caused the oxidation of fats to produce fatty acids
Fatty acids uncouple ATP synthase, causing the proton gradient (pmf) to be dissipated as heat rather than make ATP
