Oxidative-S-Dealkylation Flashcards
1
Q
What is this reaction?
A
An alkyl group attached to a S is substituted with a hydrogen.
2
Q
Why is ‘oxidative’ present in the neame?
A
There is an intermediate OH forming, that is then oxidised to form C=0, with the required product actually being a bi-product of this reaction.
3
Q
What enzymes are involved in this reaction?
A
Glutathione-S-methyl transferase and CYP enzymes
4
Q
Why don’t we see many drugs being metabolised this way?
A
There is a red flag with this reaction because it increases the potential toxicity of the durg. The C=O product formed is formaldehyde, and the body already produces enough, so it shouldn’t accumulate for too long.
