Alcohol Oxidation Flashcards
1
Q
What is this reaction?
A
An alchol group is oxidised to form a carboxylic acid
2
Q
Give an example of a compound (not drug):
A
Ethanol to ethanoic acid
3
Q
What is the intermediate of this reaction?
A
Ethanal - Aldehyde
4
Q
What enzymes are involved and which is more prominent?
A
2/3rd of ethanol ingested is metabolised by ADH- Alcohol Dehydrogenase, the rest is metabolised by CYP2E1 enzymes.
5
Q
What causes the liver damage by ethanol?
A
The ethanol is converted to ethanal, and the High levels of ethanal causes hepatotoxicity.
