What is otitis externa?
A
inflammation of the skin in the ear canal which can lead to discharge

What are the clinical features of otitis externa?
A
itching, irritation, chewing and manipulation of the tragus can cause pain, ear discharge

When to refer?
A
- Deafness
- Persistent pain from within the ear
- Tinnitus
- Vertigo
- Blocked ears
- Discharge
- Bleeding
- N/V
- Children <12 years

Q
What tx options are available for otitis externa?
A
- Choline salicylate - Earex Plus - given >1 years ear should be filled with drops and then a cotton wool soaked within the ear - repeat every 3-4 hours
- Acetic Acid (EarCalm Spray) - >12 years
one spray TDS - continue for 2 days if no improvement seek medical attention
