Other Systemic Drugs Flashcards
Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed)
nonspecific alpha and beta adrenergic receptor agonist
-Adverse effects: diplopia, blurred vision, increase IOP
-used to create meth (government regulations)
H1 receptors
primary receptor in eye
-located in smooth muscle of bronchi, blood vessels, and intestines.
-activation causes itching, vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and contraction of smooth muscle in GI tract
H2 receptors
located in gastric parietal cells, the heart, pulmonary blood vessels, and immune system cells
-activation causes itching, vasodilation, mucous discharge, and gastric secretion
Cetirizine (Zyrtec)
Second Generation H1 Antihistamine
-cause abnormal EOM contraction (oculogyric crisis)
H2 Blockers
-Cinetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), famotidine (Pepcid)
-prevents stimulation of gastric acid
Proton Pump Inhibitors
-Omeprazole (Prilosec), esomeprazole (Nexium)
-inhibits H+/K+ ATPase pumps
-first line therapy for GERD and peptic ulcers
Gastric Lining Protector
Sucralfate (Carafate)
-forms paste like substance binding to damaged tissue
-interacts with absorption of other meds
Salmetrol (Servent)
Long acting B2 agonist
Bronchodilator for COPD and asthma
1-3% keratitis and conjunctivitis risk
Albuterol/levalbuterol/terbutaline
short acting B2 agonist
rescue inhalers
Metaproterenol (Alupent)
B2 agonist
-Not recommended
-Excessive cardiovascular effect from B1 simulation
Isoproterenol (Isuprel)
nonspecific beta agonist
IV administration
Ipratropium (Atrovent)
-blocks muscarinic receptors in bronchial smooth muscles
-caution in narrow angle glaucoma
Zafirlukast/motelukast
leukotriene receptor antagonists
-treatment of asthma and bronchoconstriction
Theophylline (Theo-Dur)
inhibits phosphodiesterase
-limited use
-Beta-blockers mitigate effects
Acetylcysteine (Mucomyst)
breaks disulfide bonds in proteins of mucus
-filamentary keratitis, dry eye syndrome, and corneal burns
