what is Fifth disease aka?
parvovirus B19 / slapped cheek syndrome
presentation of 5th disease?
- fever
- erythema of bilateral cheeks
- erythematous macules & papules on extremities
mx of 5th disease?
self-limiting; supportive Mx
aetiology of measles?
measles virus
presentation of measles?
- fever
- cough
- coryza
- conjunctivitis
sign of measles?
Koplik’s spots (greyish-white spots on buccal mucosa)
these appear before maculopapular rash around face & spreading down trunk
Mx of measles?
- immunisation
- close monitoring
aetiology of scarlet fever?
strep pyogenes
clinical features of scarlet fever?
sore throat, fever, strawberry tongue, blanching rash
Mx of scarlet fever?
penicillin
aetiology of roseola infantum?
herpes virus 6&7
presentation of roseola infantum?
high fever followed by rash on trunk / legs /arms
Mx of roseola infantum?
self-limiting; supportive Mx (fluids, rest)
aetiology of hand, foot & mouth disease
enterovirus
presentation of HF&M disease
prodromal flu-like illness
followed by
painful vesicular lesions on hand, feet & mouth
