- urine dipstick- send for mc&s
give 3:
- oxygen - if sats <94%
- fluids
- Abx

treatment of meningitis in community?
IV/IM BenPen
treatment of meningitis in hospital?
- < 3 months: cefotaxime plus amoxicillin
- >3 months: ceftriaxone
vancomycin should be added if risk of penicillin resistant pneumococcal infection
complications of meningitis?
- hearing loss
- cerebral palsy
aetiology of meningococcal septicaemia?
neisseria meningitidis
presentation of meningococcal septicaemia?
- non-blanching petechiae/purpura
- fever
- may be associated w meningeal signs
chemoprophylaxis for contacts of pt with meningococcal septicaemia- who have been in contact for 7 days prior to onset?
single dose ciprofloxacin
most common aetiology of encephalitis in kids and neonates?
- kids- HSV type 1 (cold sores)
- neonates- HSV type 2 (genital warts, contracted during birth)
Mx of encephalitis in kids?
suspected–> Aciclovir right away
HSV & VZV: Aciclovir
CMV: Ganciclovir
