infection & inflammation of the bronchioles
main causative agent?
RSV
typical age?
<12 months
when does it usually occur?
during winter months
symptoms?
cough & coryzal symptoms
followed by respiratory distress & off feed
what are coryzal symptoms?
those of an URTI
- runny nose
- sneezing
- mucus at back of throat
- watery eyes
signs of respiratory distress in an infant?
- tachypnoea
- cyanosis
- nasal flaring
- head bobbing
- grunting
- subcostal/intercostal recession
- tracheal tug
what is grunting?
expiratory sound made due to expiration against a partially closed glottis
what is stridor and wheezing
stridor- inspiratory noise caused by obstruction of upper airway
wheezing- expiratory noise caused by narrowed airways
other signs O/E?
wheeze & crackles heard
Mx?
- supportive
- oxygen
- NG feeds
- CPAP if severe
what can be given as prophylaxis?
Palivizumab - RSV monoclonal antibody given as primary prophylaxis during RSV season to at risk infants
complication?
