Stop osteoclast activity and inhibit bone resorption
How should bisphosphonates be taken?
In the morning on an empty stomach (do not take any other meds or lie down for 30 min after taking)
What are side effects of bisphosphonates?
Dysphagia
Esophageal irritation
Abdominal pain
Dyspepsia
What line of therapy are SERMs (evista)?
2nd
What percentage do SERMs (evista) decrease vertebral fractures?
30%
What are the side effects of SERMs (evista)?
Hot flashes, flu-like symptoms, increase risk of DVT by 3 fold
When is parathyroid hormone therapy recommended for osteoporosis?
In people who continue to fracture after 1 year on bisphosphonates
How long can parathyroid hormone therapy be used?
24 months max
What line therapy is calcitonin nasal spray?
3rd
Who is calcitonin nasal spray approved for?
Women who are 5 years post menopause
