What is osteoporosis?
Is a condition where there is a reduction in density of bones, making the bone weak + prone to damge.
risk factors for osteoporosis?
Older age
Female
Reduced mobility
Low BMI
Post menopausal women
Rheumatoid arthritis
Alcohol + smoking
long term corticosteroids
other medications
Diagnosis of osteoporosis?
Frax tool used to give results
Bone mineral density is tested using a dexa scan
Managment of osteoporosis?
Lifestyle changes
vitamin D + calcium given to patients
First line - Bisphosphonates
Causes of osteoporosis?
M: Myeloma
M: Malabsorption
C: Cushings
P: Parathyroid
S: Steroid
What is pathophysiology of osteoporosis?
When osteoclasts break down bone more than osteoblast can form bone causing pores in bone + decreasing density
There will be:
- thining of cortical bone
- widening of haversian canals
- Decrease number of trabeculae
symptoms of osteoporosis?
fractures (vertebrae more often)
