Osteopathic Principles Flashcards
Somatic Dysfunction
Diagnosis of osteopathic dysfunction
Palpation
To examine with touch
range of motion
The degree of movement of a joint
Osteopathic philosophy
The body has the natural ability to heal itself
OMT
Osteopathic manipulative treatment
Mechanoreceptor
Receive input for touch and proprioception
Thermoreceptor
Receive input for temperature
Nociceptor
Receive input for pain/noxious stimuli
Merkel disc
Superficial cutaneous receptor. Senses light touch. Sustained stimuli. Slow adapting.
Meissner corpuscle
Superficial cutaneous receptor. Senses light touch. Initial stimulation. Rapid adapting.
Pacinian Corpuscle
Deep receptors. Detect deep pressure. Rapid adapting.
Ruffini Endings
Deep receptors. Detect stretching force. Slow adapting.
Golgi Tendon Organs
Slow adapting nerve fibers interspersed in tendons. Sense Muscle tension.
Muscle Spindle
Dynamic rapid adapting and static slow adapting mixed. Senses muscle stretching. Within muscle fibers.
Red reflex
Normal reflex of blanching follows by redness after rubbing on the paraspinous muscles. Slowly fades back to normal. Abnormal test may indicate somatic dysfunction.
