Osteology Arthrology and Myology Flashcards
CN: Which ribs are most commonly fractured?
Middle ribs, anterior to costal angle
What structures makes up the vertebral arch?
Lamina and pedicle
What type joint types are found on the sternal joints?
Symphasis type at manubriosternal joint, and synchondrosis joint at the xiphoid process
What type of joint is the sternocostal joint?
Planar synovial joint
Which sternocostal joint is an example of permanent synchondrosis?
3rd sternocostal joint, held together by anterior radiate ligament
Describe the costotransverse articulation
Ex: Rib 6 will articulate with the superior demifacet of the 6th vertebra and inferior demifacet of the 5th vertebra.
What type of joint is the costotransverse joint?
Planar synovial joint.
What type of joint is the costochondral joint?
Synchondrosis
What is a rib dislocation?
dislocation of sternocostal joint
What is a rib separation?
Separation at Costochondral joint
What is the direction of fibers of external intercostal muscles and what is their function?
Anteroinferior. Elevates ribs
What is the direction of fibers of internal inercostal muscles and what is their function?
Posterosuperior. depress ribs
What is Thoracentesis?
Insertion of a hypodermic needle through the Intercostal musculaturebetween ribs to obtain a fluid sample or drain small amounts of blood or fluid from the PleuralCavity. The needle is inserted between ribs inferior to the Intercostal neurovascular bundle, butsuperior to the collateral branches.
In which intercostal spaces are chest tubes typically inserted?
5th or 6th intercostal spaces.
In thorascopy, where/cavity is the thorascope inserted?
Pleural cavity
