Angiology - Olinger Flashcards
If there is an obstruction in the coronary arteries, what surgical procedure can be necessary for the patient? What vessels would you use for this?
A coronary artery bypass graft could be necessary.
The great saphenous vein is used most of the time; the radial artery can also be used.
What procedure can be used to flatten plaque that is obstructing blood flow in the coronary artery?
A coronary angioplasty - insert a small balloon catheter into the lumen of the coronary artery and inflate it to flatten the plaque, allowing increased blood flow
What is a pulmonary embolism?
Obstruction of a pulmonary artery by an embolus (e.g. blood clot, fat globule, or air bubble) –> an embolus typically passes thru right side of heart into the pulmonary arteries
What is the primary blood supply to the pericardium and the thoracic diaphragm? What vessel does this artery arise from?
Pericardiacophrenic artery – arises from the subclavian artery
List the immediate branching sequence of arteries coming off of the arch of the aorta on the RIGHT side
Arch of aorta –> brachiocephalic trunk –> right subclavian artery AND right common carotid artery
List the immediate branching sequence of arteries coming off of the aortic arch on the LEFT side
Arch of aorta –> left common carotid a. AND left subclavian a.
List the branches that coming off of the subclavian artery and what they supply
Vertebral artery (head and neck) Internal thoracic artery (breasts) --> superior epigastric artery Pericardiacophrenic artery (pericardium and thoracic diaphragm) Musculophrenic artery (7-9th intercostal spaces and thoracic diaphragm)
